Review summary

This trip started out badly but ended great. First of all I am fully aware of the risks of flying the day of the cruise but we've done it twice with no issues. It works better for us to fly out the morning of the cruise and pay carnival to shuttle us. So with that said our flight out of Dallas on Alaska Airlines Tuesday, May 23 was cancelled. An Alaska air rep worked tirelessly trying to find a flight that would get us to Seattle in time to make the ship but it was not to be. Rather than cancel our cruise and file on insurance we chose the option of Alaska flying us Wednesday to Seattle and then onto Juneau. We could board the Legend Thursday when the ship docked. We cleared this with Carnival and they were ok with us boarding Thursday. There is one thing that almost caused us to cancel and that is the fact that due to an obscure maritime law passed by congress back in 1920 we would have to pay $300/person to board the ship. This is because the ship left a US port and we were boarding at a US port. If we had boarded at a foreign port the fee wouldn't have applied. We talked to Alaska and they agreed to cover that cost since they were the reason we had to board in Juneau. We got to spend extra time in Juneau and went to Mendenhall Glacier Wednesday afternoon. It was great! With high powered binoculars we were able to see a black bear and her cub and about 25 mountain goats on the hillside to the right of the glacier. Then we got to spend a few hours in Juneau Thursday morning waiting on the ship. Ate at the twisted fish and it was really good. Alaska Air did their best to make up for the issues Tuesday. Put 6 in our group and 3 other couples in hotels for 2 nights and gave us meal vouchers. Also gave all of us $400 toward a future flight anywhere they fly good for a year. We missed 2 days of the cruise but from what we were told there were 25' seas the first sea day and a lot of people were sick in their cabins led us to think maybe we came out better than some on the ship.
