Carnival Freedom

5 Night Eastern Caribbean (Port Canaveral Roundtrip)

Sail date: June 17, 2024

Ship: Carnival Freedom

Cabin type: Balcony

Cabin number: 6456

Traveled as: Large Group

Reviewed: 2 months ago

Review summary

Large group (20+) with adults and children aboard. Great service, poor execution. Carnival pinches pennies and cruiser wallets. Many passengers are first time cruisers and it shows. The lines for burgers, pizza, burritos and custom food (omelets and sandwiches) kill the experience.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
But for traveling with a walker-assisted passenger, this would have been worse. The only glitch was the drug-sniffing dog. Lots of time wasted waiting for the dog/handler to do their jobs.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Mediocre food, with long wait times for fresh food (burgers, pizza, tacos, Mongolian and omelets). Best practices are to wake up early or take your pick during port days.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Great fun for children and adults. Camp Ocean seems addictive to the kiddos, but be aware that staying from 10PM to 1AM is extra fees. Serenity deck is kid-free. Arcade is great, but can turn expensive if the kid(s) have an unrestricted Set Sail account.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Lots of ways to keep kids interested. They even hand out awards to well-behaved kids.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Cabin Steward, bartenders, waiters and techs are all top notch!

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Lots of nooks and crannies. Well maintained for an older ship. High speed travel after an incident made for a very bumpy ride.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Great aft facing balcony with 180 degree views.

Ship tip

Be patient. Lines are LONG!

Ports of call

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

1 out of 5
Long lines, pricy food/drink for the DR. Not much to do but shop and swim. The chairs go FAST!

Port Canaveral, Florida

5 out of 5
Several hotel and parking options. Pro tip: stay before the MCO airport and save enough for dinner at a nice local restaurant.

Grand Turk Island

1 out of 5
More long lines and crowds. At least there's a beach and some local flavor.

Disembarkation

2 out of 5
Because only one passenger could go with walker-bound passenger, there was much confusion.
