Review summary

The only thing I can really say about this cruise it that we found it a little disappointing.  From the start things just did not seem to work out.

At the port we had to check luggage we have never had to check before because of its size.

When we arrived at our cabin it looked its age (the ship is 25 years old) even though the ship was "refurbished" last year.  The AC vent was filthy, part of the cabin wall/panel was broken off, the desk was covered in dirt and the bathroom floor had hair on it.

We did not meet our room steward until the third day of the cruise.

Walking around the ship it is looking its age.  This was our second time on the Fantasy (the other time was 10 years ago) and it seemed a lot older than it should be.  You can only cover up rust spots so many times with paint before you just cannot do it any more.

The only thing memorable about the food was that it was not hot.  It was warm at best and the quality was off.  For example, one night I got the bitter and blanc (white and dark chocolate bread pudding) for dessert and there was only a little dark chocolate in it and it was so dense that you could not add the sauce to it. The best meal was the seaday brunch but even then there were problems.  They did not bring one of the sides for the meal.  Dining room service was, in a word, cold.

The Serenity deck (which is where we spent most of our time in the sun) was small and the cushions on the chairs were in poor shape.  However, there were no children there (as it should be).

Although the seas were rough I did not figure that into my review.  That was not Carnival's fault.

Unless they do a complete renovation of this ship this will be our last cruise on the Fantasy.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Food was never hot and the quality was off. Even Guy's Burger Joint was a little disappointing.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
A lot of the activities were in the Grand Spectrum atrium which limited participation.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Could not get into the comedy shows because the room was full well before they started.

Children's Programs

No children.

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
Did not meet our room steward until the 3rd day of the cruise. Not sure if the staff on this ship it there because they are trainees or need improvement.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Showing its age. It needs a complete renovation to save it.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Cabin was not in great shape. AC vent was dirty, there was a section of the cabin wall/panel broken off and a number of dents/scrapes all over the cabin. The floor of the bathroom had hair on it and the desk was dirty.

Ship tip

This ship is showing its age poorly. Unless you just want to take a short cruise to get away I would not recommend this ship.

Ports of call

Mobile, Alabama

5 out of 5
Easy to get to the port from I-10. Went to eat breakfast at "Spot of Tea" after getting off the ship. So did others from the cruise. Food there was much better than on the cruise.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
Have been to Cozumel a number of times and always seem to enjoy it.

Funny you mention the ice because we had the same issue.  We did something similar.  Got 4 glasses of ice, poured them in the trash can since we had no ice bucket and used that to cool down bottles of water.  The next day a bucket of ice appeared.  Maybe it was the same steward.

You must have had a terrible housekeeper who was responsible for making your room comfortable for you. My husband and I have always had great service on the Fantasy all but one time. The room was cleaned but he was not to be found if we wanted something, like ice for the room. We just gave up and went to the lido deck and brought back several cups of ice to the room. Even when the sink in the room was completely stopped up, we couldn't find him and had to go to the service desk to get a plumber sent to fix it. Oh well, that man still didn't stop us from having a great time. I will probably have people upset with me for saying I hated Carnival Magic. It is too big and too crowded and the food was marginally okay but by the time you found a seat, you food was cold on the lido deck and we were assigned a table in the dining room with a bunch of old folks so we didn't want to go there. We are not young people but I don't like having a lot of probing questions about our finances thrown at me while I'm trying to eat. There were not enough seats for any of the shows so you had to be there and wait for the show to start a long time to insure you got a seat. The only saving grace was our stateroom girl. I almost forgot to mention the music onboard. It was the type you are forced to put up with when a traffic light turns red and you are stuck there waiting for the light to turn green so you can escape from that crap.

We cruised from March 2 to March 6.

I knew when I posted this there were going to be comments attacking me.  I am not one to sugar coat things because I believe most people want the truth, ugly or not.  We knew it was an older ship but our favorite ship, the Conquest, is getting up in years.

Some things were good on the cruise.  Like I said, seaday brunch and the lack of children in the Serenity area.  I forgot to include the Love and Marriage show.  That is always funny.  And, if you like your cabin cold (which my wife does) the AC worked real well.

However, when you go into your cabin and see dirty floors and surfaces it puts you in a negative mood.  However I guess a lot of cruisers get too drunk to notice these things.

Please send Fantasy back to Charleston. Even though it is old, I still love it and I don't want to drive to Alabama to get onboard it.

Disappointing to read as we are taking our very first cruise on Fantasy in Aug. If it's truly that bad my husband will never agree to a second cruise. 😯

There is no excuse for not cleaning but 25 hard sea years is going to show. Hopefully the price was relative. But if being new is important to you, choose your ship accordingly.

I find this very hard to believe but after all you took a cruise on the oldest ship and probably the lowest priced of the fleet. Try the Vista next time
