When I think of a cruise experience, I think of being in an environment of being pampered, feeling important, being in luxury setting, passengers dressing nicely, a wide variety of food and even gourmet foods. Beautiful decorations, the shows would Broadway caliber shows, (not just 8 dancers). I want to feel like I am on a vacation of a lifetime just by being on board. This Carnival Ecstasy was NOT this at all. This cruise was a cruise for those that wanted the cruise experience without having to dress up or be modest during their trip. I saw things on this cruise that was totally inappropriate for cruise attire. The passengers were not dressed at all the entire cruise in any nice formal attire. We felt overdressed and we just had our Sunday best with us. It was disappointing to see that this was just a lower cost, lower caliber cruise. The ONLY reason we went on it was because it was a last minute idea for a birthday celebration and it was the closet departure destination from where we lived. We did not think about doing a lot of research on this particular ship and in hide-site, wish we had. It was okay, but not great. Having been on Princess, Norwegian, Disney (twice), and Royal Caribbean, we will not go on a Carnival cruise again. If Carnival ups their game and brings in a nicer more upscale ship, we might consider it. But for the future, we will make arrangements to go to Florida to ship out.

Food and Dining

The buffet (not buffet) was the absolute WORST! It was small, the food tasted really bad. We tried it 3 different times and just gave up. The selection was very small and their breakfast had powdered eggs that we literally had to spit out because they tasted so bad. The main dining room food was better but the service was terrible. We waited longer than I have ever waited to see our waiter. The staff must have been short hand because they seems exasperated and rushed. The portions were so skimpy. We literally go 1 1/2 fried oysters for an appetizer! 1 and 1/2! They cut one in half. The people next to us got the same. We laughed with them saying we share their half oyster. The ship only carried some Pepsi products. No Mr. Dr. Pepper. And when we asked for a sweet tea, they waiter looked at us and said, "sweet tea?". We found unsweet iced tea out of a machine in the buffet area. It was awful...must be from the water they use. It tasted like dirty water. The coffee was out of the same machine and looked like mud and tasted like dirt. It was so strong and did not taste like coffee. So we literally had nothing to drink but bottled water. When I needed coffee, I had to go to the coffee shop and pay $5.00 for real brewed coffee. Usually when you go on a cruise, you are excited about the great food and not having to cook and having a great selection of different fine foods to indulge in. NOT HERE. The only decent thing to eat was the burgers, pizza and deli...and that gets old after a few days. PLUS, the burger place closed at 6:00 p.m. so if you were up late, all you had to choose from was pizza or the deli. It was a TERRIBLE food and drink experience.
Onboard Activities

We did not go in the pool because it was always super crowded. There was only one pool on board. There was a water slide area for kids which looked nice and a mini golf course. The spa was nice too, but nothing over the top.
Entertainment
3 out of 5
We enjoyed the trivia games, the comedy shows and the stage shows. I give 43stars only because of the comedian Ronnie Bullard. He is what actually made the best part of our cruise. Seeing him made us forget about the rest of the bad things on board. One note of advice, to make it fair for all, please don't just play one note for the music trivia games. We had to walk out because it was just ridiculous.
Service and Staff

We were on the upper deck near the water park and there were not waiters. We need to get a cool drink. Three times cleaner staff came up and we asked them to send a waiter up. We saw below one of the cleaning staff ask a waiter to come up to us (and others). He shook his head NO. I finally waved a different waiter from below and he was all smiles and said he would be right up. He was there in 2 minutes. He was pleasant and very sweet. He said he did not know why the waiter who was supposed to be up there did not come our way. Also, we had purchased the "Bubbly" package. Had we known they didn't service coke products, we would not have done so. When I made my purchase, they automatically charge me a large tip. But whenever we asked for a soda, they would bring us a receipt and it asked for additional tips. Not only was it crazy and a waste of time for the waiters to constantly have every passenger sign a receipt, some got upset when we did not tip them because of their attitude and service. Let the passengers enjoy the cruise. Use a scanner to scan our ship card so we don't have to sign anything. It really held up the waiters time when he/she was serving a large group and others were waiting to order.
Ship Quality

The ship is being retired in a couple months, as it should. It's done it's time. Our stateroom was very nice and updated, but the rest of the ship showed its age and wear and tear. There was rust all over in many area, worn out walking areas, and we never were able to ride the glass elevators because one was out of service the entire cruise and the other one worked on and off. The last full day neither one worked. The ship did not have a deck where you could walk around the entire length of the ship. This surprised me as the other 5 ships I was on all have full ship length promenade decks. I guess this was due to the age and small design of the ship. All areas of the ship were well maintained as far as staff picking up passengers glasses and food leftovers. I saw more staff of cleaners than any other staff on board. They deserve kudos.
Cabin / Stateroom

The cabin was clean, comfortable and okay in size. I had balcony cabins on other ships and they all had a small table and 2 chairs and/or a sofa. This cabin was way too small for any of those things. The bathroom was large and that was great! It was the largest bathroom on any of the ships I have ever sailed on.
Ship tip
Do not go on it unless you are looking for a super casual, back yard BBQ type of experience.
Very true JT. I'd also comment that I've been disappointed with the food on recent Carnival cruises, but that was a long way from saying it was terrible. I actually like sampling the small appetizers in the MDR. Better to have the small servings than seeing food wasted.
Well you mention you’ve sailed on NCL but they also don’t do formal attire. And that’s just the way I like it! I’m surprised any of the cruise lines you mention met your expectations previously to be honest.
Sounds like someone did not do any research (and admitted it) and did not get any information from the booking company. Sadly, buffets vary widely among the various ship classes and one needs to do a lot of research.
We went on 1 cruise with Carnival. That was a one and done. Not impressed at all. Cater to a party mentality and thus type of reputation. We had prior cruises with Royal Caribbean and what a 360 experience. Since then we have been loyal Princess cruisers. But do your research there is a cruise line for you.
Thanks for the review. I’m not sure why you would’ve expected pampering, being in a luxury environment, gourmet restaurants, etc. on Carnival or any other main stream cruise line. If that is what you are looking for, try Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, Seabourn or Viking.
