Review summary

Our first Fred Olsen cruise & based on this experience it won’t be our last! Smaller ship makes cruise more intimate & this offsets having less dining options & less to do on board. Staff are all first class. Service & food was 5 star. Highlights were La Palma, Lanzerote & Cadiz.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Efficient slick & very quick on board in less than 30 mins!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Quality of food & service in both main dining rooms & speciality dining was five star. Highly recommend Fr3d Olsen on basis of this experience.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Given time of year (weather) & destination from Southampton, pools were sometimes out of use. However, on board quiz’s lectures etc. Helped fill the day when cruising & we’re first class. Being on smaller ship hampers the on board activity, but intimacy of vessel offsets this.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Overall very good, the ship song & dance team put on some truly excellent shows. Magician also quite good.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The Fred Olsen service was truly five star from start to finish.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Easy to navigate around smaller vessel. Although an older ship the standard of cleanliness & repair was very good.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Plenty of space, spotlessly cleaned everyday & bed always turned down with itinerary for following day placed on pillow. Only single beds to make best use of space, but we were aware of that ahead of cruise. It worked on this size of ship.

Ship tip

Remember you are on @ smaller vessel & don’t expect lot’s to do on at sea days especially if you are travelling from Southampton in winter.

Ports of call

Funchal, Madeira

4 out of 5
We have been before but explored the old part of the city better. Did not do an excursion based on having visited Funchal before.

Santa Cruz De La Palma, Canary Islands

5 out of 5
Very pretty clean town although quiet. Not easy to get to so visiting on a cruise a great idea. We loved the quaint shops & houses. No excursion

Santa Cruz De Tenerife, Canary Islands

3 out of 5
Very busy city & a bit dirty. Not much to recommend it & maybe shows you why we tend to go to this island for beach holidays. We did visit La Laguna (old capital) on the tram which was good fun. Worth doing on your own & easy to do so. No excursion.

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

3 out of 5
Similar to Santa Cruz Tenerife, but maybe a bit more to see in old part of city & cleaner. Easy access to beach from ship dock. No excursion.

Arrecife, Lanzarote, Canary Islands

5 out of 5
Lovely town. Smaller & bustling although likely helped by visiting on a Friday. Very cheap for coffee & cake. Wonderful port & harbour, great leather bargains in market! No Excursion.

Cadiz (Spain)

5 out of 5
Wonderful city! Beautiful clean beach close to ship dock. Open top bus tour worthwhile to get feel of city. Lovely squares & cafes, will definitely go back for city break based on this experience. No excursion.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Very slick conducted by deck in really efficient manner
