Review summary

We were disappointed at first. Only one ship card bifold for both me and my wife to share. Felt that should not be and is not becoming for a premium cruise line. Our first day rating was a C, the experience graduated to a B+ by the end of the cruise. Best things: itinerary and staff. Not so great: food at the buffet and main dining room. However, we spoke to Mario (food and beverage manager...exceptional human being) and the executive chef privately and expressed our concerns. We really felt that they will take our comments and do all they can to improve those deficiencies. Impressed with Azamara

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Specialty Restaurants (Prime C and Aquilina) both very good. Main dining room food quality and selection seemed to improve over the 9 days. Buffet not so good. Spoke with the head chef and director of food and beverage. Both were accessible and open to critique regarding maintaining buffet so it looks and is appetizing.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
White Night...probably one of the better on-ship activities we've experienced in 10 years of cruising. Smaller ship usually translates into not so interesting onboard activities...but this Azamara Journey did well for a small ship.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
As with most, some are a hit and others a miss. The cruise director, Alicia, was amazing and really talented performer in her own right.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff was accommodating and always wanting to do whatever to improve our overall cruise experience. Our butler, steward, and assistant steward were some of the hardest working folks who we interacted with every day. Bartenders and wait staff at the Pool Bar were phenomenal. Always available and professional.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Was going to give this 4 stars as the ship is older. But after a few days, we realized how well maintained the ship was and how hard the staff who were assigned to maintain the ship worked on a daily basis. Surprisingly nice!

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
If it were not for the leak at the shower door (a design issue), I would rate this 4.5 stars. Chair should be cleaned...or probably replaced. But all in all, a nice accommodation. I couldn't have opted for a smaller cabin. This size was perfect.

Ship tip

If one opts for a suite, ask more from the butler. He should have done more for us ohter than deliver room service and afternoon canapes.

Ports of call

HAVANA, CUBA

What a history! People and sights amazing. We booked an excursion outside of Azamara (Tours by Blexie) and were very much so glad we did. Incredible classic cars for both days along with a driver and guide who is an assistant professor. Wonderful tour.

CIENFUEGOS, CUBA

5 out of 5
We always look to do a beach day and came across a guide and driver (classic American car) who stayed with us while we spent several hours at Playa Rancho Luna. Wonderful 20 minute ride through wonderful countryside and to a beach that was not crowded. Not powdery white sand, but still nice.

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, CUBA

5 out of 5
Pleasantly surprised by the amount of commerce in this city. The Cigars and Rum tour sponsored by Azamara was incredible. The lunch stop was OK....food should have been better, but it was where the tour guides family works.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Disembarking in Miami can be very crowded and disorganized. Terminal J is the best as only Azamara Journey was disembarking that day. Getting luggage, going through Customs, and having our Uber driver meet us was a breeze.
