American Independence

6 Night Hudson River (New York Roundtrip)

Sail date: October 22, 2022

Ship: American Independence

Traveled as: Couple

Reviewed: 1 year ago

Review summary

The ports along the Hudson were very entertaining and educational, as is the rule on this cruise line. We couldn’t believe our eyes as we enjoyed mile after mile of fantastic fall foliage color. Although we live in the northeast, we have never seen such a display of nature’s splendor. All in all, I would take this cruise again, next year!

Ports of call

New York, New York Did not visit port

My hometown.

WEST POINT, NEW YORK

5 out of 5
Great educational tour - learned a lot about its importance in the American Revolution. Benedict Arnold tried to give the British defense plans of this port. Kościuszko strengthened defenses with expert engineering and constructed a chain across the river to block the British. we learned that West Point is actually the western-most site on the Hudson. These facts are not in our schoolbooks.

KINGSTON, NY

5 out of 5
Visited Maritime Museum, and a beautiful mansion

TROY, NEW YORK

5 out of 5
Visited State Capital Building which has architecture that rivals European castles plus a great museum about New York from prehistoric to modern times.

CATSKILL, NEW YORK

5 out of 5
Visited Thomas Cole National Historic Site with numerous paintings by the man who became the father of American landscape painting and founder of the Hudson River School of Art. Great trip.

SLEEPY HOLLOW, NEW YORK

5 out of 5
Sleepy Hollow is where Washington Irving, the celebrated author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, lived and is buried. We walked in his footsteps and learned that his characters were based on people that he knew. We visited his gravesite in a fascinating cemetery dating from the 1600s. Many, many more people are buried in Sleepy Hollow than live there.

Disembarkation
