Review summary

It was a very nice cruise. English speaking guides were for the most part very informative and interesting. A lot of walking was required to partake of the city tours, so keep that in mind if there is a mobility issue. We walked about 45 miles during the entire cruise. There are "gentle" walking tours, however, we found that the guides did not make any exception in endurance and/or speed while giving their presentations. This was a huge problem for several of us who did use the gentle tour. Feedback was given in the cruise survey that guides need to be aware of mobility issues. I do feel that more activities should be included with the off-ship tours, not just talking about buildings/churches. Maybe if music and/or demonstrations while on land could be scheduled prior to guests arriving to ports, that would make the excursions more enjoyable and memorable.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Everything was clean, bright and well presented. My only issue was that it was a bit too gourmet for my tastes. There was always salmon or grilled chicken for dinner from which to choose if the main offering was not acceptable. However, having ordered the grilled chicken twice, it was just plain as could be, cooked well and moist, but nothing special that I wouldn't have cooked at home. I would have preferred more fish offerings and more standard salads at each meal. Honestly, having been on two prior Viking cruises, we both thought that the food was better on Viking; not the amount, but many more choices, especially at the breakfast buffets and lunch. They actually had someone cook custom omelets right in front of you. It just added to the cruise experience. Additionally, at the coffee/tea stations (there were two), we always found baskets of home-baked cookies and treats at breakfast and during the day. AMA did not do this and we missed these treats.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Not many experiences were offered. Again, on the other cruises, they had live cooking demonstrations with tastings, sampling of local specialties during afternoon cruising or evening dancing from locals who were invited onboard. There were very few activities on our cruise. There was a very small pool but not many utilized it even though it was August. There was a giant chess board and pieces to play, but we don't play chess. Saw one couple play the entire cruise. We did play cornhole one evening; two boards were available.

Entertainment

One and only singer was fantastic singing the Motown 60's music.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff was wonderful; always greeting you and couldn't do enough for you. We so appreciate our AMA gifts of men's cap and lovely womens scarf. Thank you for that, AMA!

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Very clean and well maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Great setup/layout of room. Very comfortable and clean.

Ship tip

In warm weather bring bathing suit as there is a heated pool; albeit small but convenient.

Disembarkation

Easy, quick and no issues. Transport to airport was smooth and easy. Having a cruise line rep on the bus to the airport and disembarking with us to direct us to our airline desks was invaluable.

Thanks for sharing your review. We love AmaWaterways and have sailed with them three times. Their ships are very comfortable and have the lowest draft of their competitors which keeps them on the rivers when other cruise lines are forced to use buses to move passengers. Their customer service is first class and local dancers, singers, winemakers, and even glass blowers were brought aboard the ship in the evenings to entertain guests. Free bicycles (and guided tours) are also offered in most ports for those seeking a more robust activity. A Christmas Marketplace river cruise should be added to everyone’s bucket list.
