Priority boarding has a special line that they can use. Everyone chooses their own boarding time, but usually the priority line is much shorter.

if you have priority boarding, you will have a special line that will get you to security check faster. If the ship is actually boarding, you will walk on with everyone else. if not, you will go to a special area of the terminal and will be the first group to board when they open it up. As the others note, nobody gets on the ship until it's released and the gangways open

That's not quite true. you choose your check in time. That doesn't mean your boarding time. that all depends on when the ship is cleared by customs.

What time did you sign up for? Priority gets a couple day advance to sign up for what time they want to board

would help if you mentioned the cruise line or ship since there are differences. you posted on the port page
