Rates are lower, but you never know where you'll be on the ship. So you'll have to wait till the cruiseline assigns your stateroom, which could be a week before you sail. I've only done it twice and lucked out on an aft view balcony

how about an interesting side note? I've read recently that these "guaranteed cabins" are not truly guaranteed and have the (slight) risk of being bumped if the cruise is overbooked. l
