It was too icy to get into our anchor point the first night and thus our midnight cruise shore excursion was cancelled and they didn’t rebook us on the daytime boat trip because it was a,ready full. Fortunately, we were able to book our own ice cruise independently

Our excursion took a small boat into a field of (grounded) icebergs of impressive size. Spotting a mother and calf humpback feeding from almost too close was a big plus.

We took the optional boat tour of the ice fjord. It was magical. The town is cute, with little shops, cafes and a wonderful museum. The museum has an interesting rooftop viewing platform and is at the head of a boardwalk leading to a vantage point by the fjord. Just remember that what goes down must come back up! We didn't realize how far the path descends until we started the climb back to the museum.

Absolutely must do the optional tour to take a small boat amidst the Illulissat Icefjord - a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a very good reason!
