Had a great tour with locals round the island. The tour was in 4WD pickups. The information shared was interesting. Only real complaint is that the leader do not speak English too well. It did make fun for the those of us who know a bit of French to get the ideas across to all the group.

Lovely and very different. Black sand beaches, not as lush and green but still lovely. We bought a tiki with intricate carving. We were greeted by a huge statue of a Nuka Hiva Warrior and a tiki. Very few English speakers.

Also a school bus but not quite so primitive as Hiva Oa. A beautiful walk around the bay, with the complimentary shuttle bus to pick you up when you've had enough. The museum was interesting, especially the woman who owns it, and the crafts there are of surprisingly high quality. The modern cathedral is a fascinating contrast to Western styles.

We took a scenic drive through Taipivai Valley and visited the Te Aitua temple. We stopped at the Hooum black beach, also. The drive was very scenic and took about three hours with stops.

Small port, went to the market, had singers, lots of stalls selling beautiful handmade crafts for good prices. Hubby walked down to see the church and explore a bit. Very friendly people.

As in Fakarava, things to do were limited if you didn’t scuba or snorkel. Shipping was extremely limited. The beaches close to the tender port were not really for sunbathing.

Not a lot to do here but there were people operating tours if you got off early. We walked around local neighbourhoods, visited the lovely Notre Dame church, went swimming on both sides of the bay. Also did a local hike (ask for directions) to a great look out. Love how remote and non touristy this place is.
