If you are on a budget take a taxi to Senshu Park - will only cost about Y5000 into heart of the park saves a steep climb up steps but gets you ahead of all the tour groups and gives you peaceful time to see the castle, gardens and shrines. A taxi (Y3700) back to the Akita Port Marine Tower (free entry) gives great views of the port area and city. Short walk back to the ship.

Unfortunately the one excursion we splurged on was not worth it. It was basically an overpriced shuttle. They drove us to a restaurant near the samurai houses for lunch and then we walked to the samurai houses. We had to rush through the first in order to get to the second one where we the owner was going to speak to us. Very cool overall to see if you've never done it but could have used more time in the first house which was the biggest.

Very nice. Akita really went all out to welcome us. My favorite.
