Book a private transfer. I've used civitavecchiashuttleexpress without incident. Where to stay is dependent on what you plan on seeing. Vatican, collesium, piazza novena ...

We stayed in Rome close to the things we wanted to visit and booked a private transfer to the port, which is, as another stated, quite a ways from Rome. Stayed at a lovely B&B that was walking distance to the Vatican and museums. The proprietor, Luca, was helpful in booking our arrangements and recommending local restaurants. One day will be difficult to see much as it is pretty spread out. In a week, we barely saw the highlights.Beware of street performers dressed as gladiators at the Colosseum and don't accept flowers or anything handed to you or they make you pay for it at Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain.Enjoy!

Rome is a 90 min. bus ride away from the port. My suggestion is to book a tour that also includes an airport transfer. Rome is huge and it’s impossible to explore this without a guide/ transportation unless you know the city. A your guarantees correct arrival times.

I would look at what VIATOR could offer. Personally I would stay near the TERMINI station. ( direct train line from Rome airport to Rome). It’s Also a direct train to civitivechea …cruise terminal. There are taxis to take you the short distance from train station to the cruise terminal… in Rome - Viator could do some tours for you. AND take you to the cruise terminal IF you didn’t want to catch the train.

the question of what to see in Rome with the limitation of 1 day.number 1 on most folks list would be the Vatican, St Peters square. (going inside though would consume the whole day.number 2 Trevi fountain (such an iconic tourist attraction)number 3 coliseum (again such a famous landmark)The "hop on hop off" bus is a fantastic way to get from one to the other

We always stay at the Ro e Airport Hilton. It's attached to FCO (you can easily walk from the airport), because they have lovely AC and it's nice to crash for a few hours if you can get an early check-in. Then the hotel offers shuttle service into Rome. The train is also an easy option. The one thing I would definitely do in Rome is book a "jump the queue" tour of the Vatican. I'm not religious, but the beauty and history overwhelmed me, and I like to avoid lines :). Hope you have a spectacular time, and let us know what you end up doing!!

Really depends on what you want to do & see. only a day can be tough for jet lag. my personal choice is near Parthenon or Piazza Navona, which are walking distance to everything. Mia Limo has great rates for private/semi-private transfers & can take you to the pier. Many of the taxis and other shuttles can only take you to an intermediary drop off Largo del Pace.
