get yourself from Civitavecchia port to the train station (Trenitalia), ride 45 minutes to the city and exit at Roma San Pietro or whichever other station. Pre-book your own Vatican Museums tour, enjoy! ride back in enough time. cheeeeeap! the official excursions have a crazy markup, but if you're able and willing to do it on your own, you can for less than half the price.

Visit Ostia Antica, it's generally quiet compared to the other tourist attractions. Pre covid, you used to be able to catch public transport from the port directly there. The bus stop was on the main road about 5 mins walk from the entrance. Otherwise a taxi might be worth considering as it's not far.

We actually stay in Rome several days before cruise. Took the train to civitavecchia and the shuttle from train station to ship. The actually cruise port doesn't have as much to do or see. If you are fit you can walk into town from ship. But why go to Rome and not spend time in that beautiful historic city. We lived there and still can't see it all. 😊

agreed, you simply have to go to Rome, if you've done that to death you could try Ostia for something fresh

Most people go into Rome, there are buses from the port, or the train into Rome. If you haven’t been to Rome, I suggest you take the bus in.

It’s been many years, but husband and I took a train from the port into Rome. Stops were clearly labeled. We then saw the Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain & Spanish steps.

Go to Trastevere neighborhood to stroll around, shop, people watch & eat. Better to go late afternoon and spend the evening there. So authentic and quaint. Not a tourist trap. It was my favorite memory of Rome when we went in 2019.
