We did the hop on hop off bus. It was very easy. When we stopped at the Coliseum there were people selling tours and we were able to buy the tickets right there no problem. Timing wasn’t an issue since you use the bus to get on and off each stop whenever you want for as long as you want. Our hotel was walking distance from Termini and also sold us tickets for the hop on hop off in the lobby. The only “attraction” we didn’t use the bus for was Trevi Fountain, but we did use a taxi for that.

Depending where you are staying.. if you are near the Termini (central train station) everything is walking distance, except the Vatican.

you can buy tickets, a little cheaper, at coopculture.it, roughly 30 days in advance. not exactly skip the line but a different access point. I would plan on a later time to ensure you make the HOHO.

Watch out for the Gestapo, (ATAC S.p.A.), if you use any public transportation. They prey on tourists. Make sure you validate your tickets. Read ATAC reviews on TripAdvisor.
