Not sure why he said the bus was recommended over the train. Train is faster. But definitely do a carnival excursion. It’s a long ways and you want to make sure you’re back on time.

totally agree about taking a ship excursion! Trains and traffic can cause delays, making you late and you don't want to miss the ship. Also get an excursion specifically for the Vatican ... they will have skip- the-line access and trust me, the lines are notoriously long. It is impossible to just go in for a quick tour of the Sistine Chapel: you have to make your way through the whole museum to get to it. The museum is enormous with so much to see. we practically jogged through to get to the Chapel and it still took hours and we went in the off peak time. Well worth seeing though. Please note that you cannot speak or take pictures inside the Sistine Chapel ( it is a holy place and the camera flashes can be harmful to the art.) Buy a postcard of it instead at the gift shop and mail it home to yourself from the Vatican post office which is right in St. Peter's Square)

We experienced less than an hour each way. It helped that our tour was on a Sunday. So less cars and people out. We used ToursbyLocals.com which helped coordinate the pickup at the port and tour throughout the city.
