Just know you need an international driver's license. Learn the street signs & regulations. My husband was going to do it till he found out how easy it would be to screw-up & end up in a restricted zone & not know it.

We've rented a car in Civitevecchia and it's very straightforward. we drove in the countryside including Orvieto. Renting a car in Rome however? Utter madness.

I spent a couple weeks in Italy last November and went everywhere by train and taxicab when needed. It would have been a nightmare for me to navigate by car on my own especially in the larger cities or in areas with limited access for vehicles. To get to Rome from Civitavecchia by train is relatively easy and inexpensive. Once in the city, walking or taxi is easiest in my opinion.

Rental cars are prohibited in parts of Rome. I understand you were not specifically asking for Rome, but it is something to consider. you can find more about it by searching LTZ or zone limiting travel. makes parking a nightmare.

Tourists are strongly recommended to NOT drive in the city of Rome. It’s nuts there….even crossing the street as a pedestrian is crazy….watch a few videos on YouTube

Unless your intent is to immediately leave Rome and travel through the country, I cannot recommend getting a car in Rome. There is no where to park it. And those unaccustomed to Italian driving may put themselves into unnecessary peril, both physically and legally. If you are talking about getting the car in Civitavecchia and driving from there, entirely different matter. It’s a good way of getting from place to place through the Tuscan countryside. On the other hand, it you just want to go from city to city and hang out in cities… don’t get a car. Take the train. It’s easier and cheaper, but bring some patience, they are often not on time.
