It appears you have to take a tender boat and then you have to take a bus or gondola lift to get to the upper part of the island. I have never been, but I am REALLY looking forward to it!

the cable car is €6 each way and think it is about every 30mins. there are some restaurants and cafes in the port. the town of thira/fira is directly above. its easier to walk down as oppose to walk up the 580 so steps. it can be a bit slippy especially near the donkeys.

you can walk to Thira if you are willing to walk up the donkey path. You could also go up the cable car at the same location. I prefer to take a water taxi to a small port below Oia.They will also bus you up to Oia, and back to Fira towards the end of the day. The fourth way is to take a ships excursion which will tender you to the new port. no matter how you get to the top, you will be on your own to get back down to the old port. the only options are the donkey path and the cable car. we walked down the donkey path, and I will do it again, next time. it wasn't that bad.

Which town? Fira or Oia? Oia is the one on all the postcards, I recommend a bus tour as the town is up on the cliffs and you get to see some of the island on the drive Fira is the town with the cable car and donkeys, and is the capital of the island. Both towns are pretty but definitely do Oia as a minimum.

its a Tender, when you get to the port they have a speed boat for 20€ if I remember that will take you to Oia.

Not been there but going in June. From my research you can but it’s a steep uphill climb. You can ride donkeys or take the gondola up (typically a long line) or take a water taxi to Ola where the town is lower to water level.

The road is marble and can be slippery and it will take you a little bit to get up the hill and it feels narrower once you get to by the donkeys. Then you have to contend with hoping a donkey doesn't kick you, or that you step on donkey mess. The cable car only hold so many people, and last time I was there was basically one up one down, so it may take a little bit while you wait for one.

Whatever you do, don't take the donkey ride down the steps - unless you have really good insurance!

No. You tender in and then you can either take the donkey, the gondola, or climb 6,000+ stairs. The town is on top of a volcano crater, so it's too shallow for ships to dock.
