The estuary boat trip at the Caroni Bird Sanctuary was a little disappointing. We saw several birds, but they were too far away for good photos. The scarlet ibis is beautiful, but they were elusive so I found a photo online. We saw green herons, blue herons, scarlet ibis, flamingos, iguanas, a screech owl, and a small boa constrictor in a tree. I would recommend taking binoculars on this tour as there is no guarantee that the birds and animals will come near the shore.

We hired an independent taxi that guided to specific places we wanted to see. Took us to Bamboo Cathedral, then to Maracas Bay where we took in the local sounds and ate Shark & Bake (it’s a great local favorite sandwich). Then ended our tour with a trip around the “worlds largest round-about” where we saw all the historical buildings. Then did some shopping on our walk back to the shop.

We took a ship organised excursion to the bird sanctuary. We're not into bird watching but it was a fantastic day. Saw flamingos, red ibis and loads of other wildlife. The guide was very informative and took his time to explain everything he saw. If you get chance to go on this excursion, do it!
