You can make the rental prior to boarding, at the excursion desk, or pay at the kiosk in port. Payment due at time of reservation. The clamshells are setup already in a particular spot, with the choice of which set of loungers on a first come first to pick location within that area. Some people find the lack of airflow stuffy.

We book as an excursion from Carnival, a package for 2 people, a clamshell, 2 loungers, 2 water floats, and unlimited chair lift rides. The last time I booked it was in early 2020, so not sure if still offered. At that time it was only about $69, and that is for 2.
