We love Martinique, but the best of the island is outside Fort-de-France. The cathedral and library have nice architecture, and there are some gift shops but not much else by the port. The Fort was closed during our visit. A ferry crosses the bay to Pointe du Bout where there are some beaches, shopping, and cafés. Book a tour or rent a car.

To continue my answer.. outside of Fort-de-France, Martinique's Rum plantations, the ruins of St. Pierre, Cap 110 memorial, Slavery museum, rain forest, beaches of Le Diamant or Anses-d'Arlet are all worth a visit.
