There isn’t much to see here but we had a good time. The people there have worked hard to fix up the old cannery and put nice shops in there. We walked the 1.5 miles into the town and saw the Carving Den where they carve the totem poles. We did the Kayaking tour which was fun our guide told us a little about the town as we floated through the harbor and around the area. Even in the rain and cool air it was fun. We saw bald eagles and a seal.

This port is beautiful. We did an excursion through Viator and did the brown bear search (grizzlies). Unfortunately we didn't see any, but our guide was amazing and fascinating. He was from Tlingit tribe and the stories he told of the island during WWII and growing up where he wasn't allowed to speak his native language are both horrific and fascinating. The ride around the island was just incredible. I don't feel we would've gotten to see that any other way.

Boat docks about 2 miles outside of Hoonah at Icy Strait Point. Visit the rocky beach near the boat at low tide. Cannery is also cool...fun way to utilize an old building and keep the history alive (even if it is filled with tourist stuff). If you truly want to appreciate Alaska small town life, take the $5 bus ride into town and walk around. Watch the totem pole being worked on, talk to the locals, visit the brew pub, and appreciate the slow pace of a remote Alaskan fishing village.

Did the zip rider. Had a great narrated school bus tour up to the top of the mountain. Then zipped down over a mile back to the bottom. Loved it!

We did a private tour with “Hoonah Whaling Tours”. This company is run by the cutest family. It’s a small boat, only holds 6 passengers and the captain. Captain Jordan knew exactly where to find whales. We saw quite a few whales, so close to our boat we could hear them communicating. We also saw sea otters, eagles and our captain took us by an island with tons of seals. Highly recommend this company. We loved Icy Straits but you do have to plan either an excursion or some type of private tour. We walked the 1.5 miles to the town of Hoonah but were disappointed at the lack of opportunities to see or do things on our own. If your ship is stopping here plan ahead. There was a zip line that seemed to be enjoyed by a lot of people (not us)
