I was curious to know how many of you try to learn key phrases in a foreign language before visiting that country? Lots of cruise lines hold classes in the culture of the country that you are visiting, including teaching key phrases you may need ashore. Do you attend them? Do you find them helpful? Do you attempt to use some key phrases that you learned?

Do You Ever Attempt To Speak a Foreign Language When Cruising Internationally?

I have tried, usually don't work well. But most of the time I can get hello and thank you down.
Saying hello and thank you in a foreign language gets you a warm smile and feelings of good will I have always discovered.
I, too, took Spanish for many years in high school and college. If the language is spoken slowly I can understand most of what is said. Yeah right that anyone speaks lowly.
Just say "Mas despacio, por favor."
I speak some Spanish - not fluent - and I use it in Spanish speaking countries. I carry my phrase book with me to be on the safe side.
Spanish is a great language to speak or understand. I took it in school for many years and don't think that I will ever speak it fluently unless I moved to a Spanish speaking country. However, I know enough to get by when traveling. Phrase books are great to have when traveling or one of those electronic translators that we carry with us.
We have tried and failed but normally people appreciate the attempt. I downloaded an app that translates english to a number of languages on my smart phone. I practice a few times and give that a shot... or else just play the translated phrase. So far it has worked fairly well. People are curious about the smartphone app so if my attempt doesn't work, the phone breaks the ice.
i find that most people speak English, anyway.
