Converting old photos to digital?

We have two steamer trunks stuffed with photo albums from the days before digital cameras – many from our early cruises! Has anyone here successfully converted their old photos to digital copies? What methods and devices did you use? How long did it take and was it worth the effort? Any advice will be appreciated – thanks!

Thanks – I’ll look for one!

It can be done yourself using a scanner but that is very time consuming. Usually cheaper time wise and money wise to have a company do it for you. Many of the local print shops will offer a service to do this.

I’ll check them out – thanks!

Legacybox.com. Its a company that takes old media - paper, film, slides, 8mm and converts to digital. Highly regarded.

Thanks Bubba!

Helpful tips. Thx.

Oh my goodness so many possibilities here. This depends on your time and budget. There are companies that will digitize your old pictures. Now the question is are we talking prints or slides? Yes I know I’m dating myself here. I just went through 30 years of slides and prints.

What I found out from film days is we took a lot photos that end up being duplicates, especially if you used to bracket.

What I did was go through them all and pick out my favorites and digitized them. I ended up trashing a lot of of them. Now if you have a good scanner and time you can scan all of your prints. I sent out my slides and I believe I paid around 25 cents a slide. I do not know what they charge to digitize prints.

It took me three evenings to go through all my slides. A full day of going through prints. Now I do take a lot of photographs. (Even more now with digital cameras).

The scanning time depends on your scanner. I think it was around 3-5 minutes a print. If you decide to scan yourself, do yourself a favor and don’t try to do it all at once break it up.

Don’t know if this helps, but enjoy your trip down memory lane! I know I did!
