This holiday weekend has not been a kind one for ship departures... this one affected a HAL departure from Boston. The upside of this one is the passengers were treated to the annual fireworks display at the Esplanade. If you have to be on a ship that is not getting underway on time, I can't think of a nicer thing to get "stuck" looking at! This ship is going to miss one port of call but is apparently safely underway now.

Another delayed ship departure - July 4th from Boston

A delayed departure is always reason for concern. This one had a nice benefit. Unfortunately, there is little wiggle room for repairs. The turnaround time for the next cruise leaves no time for maintenance.

The issue of delayed departures raises important questions...
- Do ship engineers have sufficient time to identify, address, and resolve problems between sailings?
- What is the contractual arrangement with ports and what impact do delays and returns to port have on cost?
- Is ship safety being shorted in the clammer toward profit?
