Disney Cruise Line has announced it will purchase the partially completed cruise ship previously known as the ‘Global Dream’. This ship was previously owned by Dream Cruises and was set to be among one of the largest cruise ships in the world.

To complete the vessel, Disney Cruise Line will work with Meyer Werft shipbuilding company to finish construction at the MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany. The Papenburg-based company has also built Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish.

The yet-to-be-named ship will be reimagined and designed by Walt Disney Imagineers. It is expected to set sail in 2025.

“Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.

This new member of the Disney Cruise Line fleet will be based outside the United States and sail to new markets for the cruise line. The 208,000-gross-ton vessel will be among the first in the industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest-emission fuels on the market.

Disney projects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members. The ship exterior will feature the typical Mickey Mouse-inspired colors, complete with signature red funnels.

According to Disney, the ship’s “previous owner filed for bankruptcy before completing the vessel, which allowed the company to secure it at a favorable price…The project also secures employment for hundreds of former MV Werften employees and will provide opportunities for numerous maritime industry suppliers in the region.”

More details on this ship and its upcoming itineraries will be provided by Disney Cruise Line in the months to come.
