We rented a car and drove to the Volcanoe National Park and simply drove around the 11 mile rim, stopping occassionally for a closer look and pictures. Also walked through a Lava Tube, which was located in a Rain Forest. Very cool. Then, we drove about a 1/2 hour and visited the Black sand beaches. Then back towards the ship and visited the Rainbow Falls and another set of falls. Wonderful day and with 4 sharing the cost of the car, very inexpensive. Cars were scarce, though, so may want to reserve one before you get to port. We felt lucky to get one from a local agency as Hertz and others were out of cars by 9:30.
Called Hertz before we got there, and got a car with ease. Drove the entire West of Maui stopping at the Iao Valley, which was beautiful and visited the town of Lahaina. EXCELLENT shopping here and beautiful public beaches along the way. Kept the car overnight and parked near the ship. Went to the Old Lahaina Luau and was thorougly impressed with the site, the entertainment, and the variety of food-although some was a little odd. Second day, we drove through the middle of Maui for beautiful scenery and traveled the back way to Hana for about 1 1/2 hours and then turned around, as to continue on that road would take several more hours.
We took a tour of the Waimea Valley, River Ride, and Fern Grotto. Also included a lovely lunch. Great tour with a few extra site seeing stops. Recommend highly.
Good shopping in main area of Kona. Should have gone snorkeling here, but didn't plan it in time.
