Skagway was the main port of the trip, and is the entrance to the Yukon. One of the trips up to the Yukon is a must if you want to get the feel of the Gold Rush days and what people did th get there. We highly recommend the bus trip, but the train is also good if you don't want to sit for the whole time. If the weather is foggy - as ours was - the bus offers better visibility, and the guide couldn't have been better!
Our stay here was also short so we didn't take any of the tours but did scout out the town. It was raining this day which prevented roaming too much. Finding a "local" and getting some direct history is a good idea.
This town is really wirth visiting, if only to walk the streets and look at the buildings. It is a good place to shop for Alaskan souvenirs and such, but time didn't permit doing much else.
