Review summary

Overall, my husband and I, and another couple we were sailing with, had a wonderful time. We learned so much about the french culture and about wine and lavender and just really got to explore with the included shore excursions offered on the tour. I would love to sail with Viking again, and we spoke to many that had either experienced the Grand European tour or want to next. I was very impressed with how everyone was really interested in getting to know others and how open and accepting the guests were. The tone is set by the staff and by the end of the cruise everyone feels like family.

Embarkation

We were greeted by a well organized cheerful staff as we boarded. Everything seemed to be very well organized and our room was ready for us as soon as we embarked.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
I was blown away by the menu options and the quality and service of the staff. The menu had options for every palate and even though their were local French dishes, they always offered a more conservative option, for anyone who did not want to venture and try something new. I absolutely loved everything they served. The proportions were perfect, and because the food had no preservatives (being in Europe) I noticed I never felt stuffed or bloated after eating a meal.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Hmmm... we took a deck of cards, which proved to be a God send. Other than that there really is not a lot of on board activities as Viking is very destination focused. The day is full of things to do in the towns and cities so by the time you get back on board you really enjoy a lovely meal and hang out in the lounge area.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
There is a piano player in the evening and a couple of singers came on board, but nothing too extravagant. The piano player could play and sing anything you wanted and played a wide array of options. He was very talented and we did enjoy dancing a couple of nights.

Children's Programs

No children were on board

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Ah mazing! One of the bar staff even went out of their way to give me their own sandwich. We boarded after the lunch buffet was already taken down and so he came up from the galley and presented me with a delicious sandwich. The concierge are very helpful, they even arranged reservations at a 3 star Michelen restaurant by Paul Bocouse. (one of the top rated chefs in the world)

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The staff were constantly cleaning and had very high standards throughout. The only thing is the first day one of the toilets on the first deck was given off a weird smell, but they fixed it immediately and all was well.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The size is a bit small but you are only there for sleeping and getting ready. We were never in the room after that.

I would love to come back and stay longer. Lyon is a beautiful city; the 2nd largest in France and has some of the most amazing sights. We visited the basilica which was so beautiful and also the Paul Bocouse original restaurant is here.
