Review summary

It was very interesting to go through the Panama Canal. We enjoyed so many of the people we met and enjoyed most of the entertainment.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
It was well managed and easy.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The food was generally good. The service in the dining room was pretty slow but the servers were friendly and helpful. The buffet had lots of selections. We did not eat in any of the specialty restaurants. The pizza was really good.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We participated in the progressive trivia and made great friends. They had a great astronomy lecturer that we enjoyed very much.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We enjoyed the stage shows and comedians but some of the musical performances were subpar.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The cruise director and his team were energetic and fun. Our room stewards were exceptional. The only unfriendly person we met was the greeter in the Provence dining room.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Everything was clean and well maintained. The Island Princess is an older, smaller ship.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
It was a typical cruise size room but the bed was king sized and very comfortable. There was plenty of storage. The bathroom was typical as well, with a very small shower.

Ship tip

There are lots of ongoing activities like progressive trivia, cruise olympics, etc. Get involved in these. You will meet lots of nice people.

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

4 out of 5
This was the embarkation port so we did not do an excursion. Go to Everglades National Park if you have a chance.

Cartagena, Colombia

4 out of 5
We did an excursion booked separately from Princess. It was extremely hot and humid which made it hard to enjoy the tour. Make sure you go to the monastery on the hill - great views of the city.

Panama Canal Transit

5 out of 5
We went through the old locks as our ship was small enough. It was a very tight fit, There was a talk about the locks broadcast as we passed through which was very interesting.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

4 out of 5
We did an excursion through Princess and it was not optimal. It was a gondola lift that was supposed to be through the rain forest canopy but with no information, we didn't know what we were looking at. A guide took us on a walk afterward and pointed out plants. Then we took a boat ride and saw lots of birds and alligators.

Huatulco, Mexico

5 out of 5
This excursion was not booked through Princess. This was the port we enjoyed the most though the excursion we took was not optimal. The guide was good but the van we were on was tiered seating. We sat in the back and had about 3 inches of window viewing. We enjoyed watching a lady make tortillas in an outdoor oven but it was mostly shopping.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

5 out of 5
This excursion was not booked through Princess. The Malecon was beautiful and had lots of interesting sculptures. The Our Lady of Guadalupe Church was great. They took us for lunch a little outside of town to Encanto del Rio which was enchanting.

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

5 out of 5
This was our disembarkation port.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Really well organized and fairly speedy.
