Review summary

While sad to have missed two ports and the northern lights, overall I had a great time.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
really smooth….I arrived early and had no wait through the line….15 minutes sitting to wait till they allowed us on board. Pleased to find the shortest walk I have experienced upo the ship (Mayflower Terminal)

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
food was mostly quite good, although frequent surprises…never knew what the fish and chips would look like from day to day, and the “carrot cake” was a white cake with some shredded carrots on the frosting! Alfredo’s pizza was disappointing…nice crisp thin crust, but bland toppings. Cappuccinos and Lattes were great. The biggest issue with the lack of sept dining….. made it very very difficult to arrange tables with new friends. Staff did their best, it will be good to be true to set dining for at least half of one of the dining rooms

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
too cold for the pools (not surprising our itinerary) not many activities, since it’s a small ship. We were disappointed they cancelled the best show (asian fusion with dance and puppets) because of rough seas….I understand, but they didn’t put it on the next night when seas were calm. Spent most of the time at sea mingling with others and watching for the Northern Lights….they did appear fleetingly a few times, but unfortunately there were no ship announcements, so most of us missed them.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
shows were ok…comedian not very good, comic hypnotist was said to be better (I didn’t go because I don’t like watching hypnotizes people making fools of themselves.)

Children's Programs

no children

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff were always pleasant and went out of their way to be helpful

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I liked the style and size… prefer it to the glitz of the newer ships. you could see the wear on the balconies, but very clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
very comfortable except for one problem. If I had the balcony door, open it whistled, and when I close the balcony door, I could hear a low thrum through the night. The aft location meant I had a long walk for me to get to the dining rooms and the theater…. which is actually good for exercise purposes.

Ports of call

Southampton (London), England

Falmouth, Cornwall, England

we did an independent excursion, which is wonderful, highlight was the Merry Maidens Stone circle.

Cobh (Cork), Ireland

Reykjavik, Iceland

Gold Circle, Tours was great, but we really need two days

Grundarfjordur, Iceland

4 out of 5
A lovely overview of waterfalls and other scenery

Akureyri, Iceland

5 out of 5
again, an independent excursion, and lots of variety in the Scenery and walks, with a final stop at the Forest Lagoon…. Which is better than the blue lagoon because it’s not a mob scene relax in the different pools and sauna

Seydisfjordur, Iceland

5 out of 5
a wonderful wild independent excursion around the peninsula… traveling on a narrow, gravel mountain road to really tiny village…. Then to lunch with absolutely fresh cod. (we saw them cleaning the fresh caught fish outside) and finishing up with time to wander around the port town

Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland Did not visit port

The captain told us that he was concerned with a storm coming in, so we skipped the islands to get ahead of the storm. It turned out to be a false alarm… I Lerwick had sunny weather, and calm seas when we were supposed to land. Instead, we landed in Edinburgh, where the weather was rainy, and they weren’t able to plan any excursions at the last minute.

Newcastle Upon Tyne, England Did not visit port

rough seas prevented us from getting into the narrow Harbor… understandable, but really disappointing to miss a second port…. Several of us had planned to visit.Beamish…. A living history, Museum, collection of towns and farms… this would be a great excursion for Princess to plan.

Disembarkation

very quick and easy… I was with first group, absolutely super port staff… our luggage was easy to find, and we walked straight through customs, and the staff helped us to find our transport.
