There are many shops outside the port if you don't want to take an excursion. I suggest an excursion if you would like to see the ruins and history. it was pretty amazing. it's up to you tho.

As Christ Followers, we very much enjoyed our excursion to Biblical Ephesus. The history provided by our local tour guide and the opportunity to walk the streets of Ephesus will be something I will remember for the rest of my life. The tour also include a visit to the Catholic Church Shrine for Mary's House, a "Biblical Lunch" at a local restaurant which was delicious, a stop at ruins of St. John's and a local silk rug factory. Amazing cultural immersion. We also took some time back at port to shop around prior to returning to the ship. Shops felt local as opposed to many Caribbean ports or Alaska where often the shops are cruise line owned. Summer 2023 was our trip.

We did a tour. I’m really glad we did. The guide was really knowledgeable about the history and we definitely saw places we would not have gone to on our own.

I would recommend using a tour guide which explains the meaning

No, you don't need to do an excursion. There are markets and a castle within easy walking distance from the port. You can go left, straight or to the right. However, as others have said, Ephesis and the House of Mary or other historical sites are well worth it. Most likely, you would have time after to walk around. The only thing to watch out for is @ Sevda Tepesi at the top of the hill. lots of scammers wanting to charge for photos. I believe this was my favorite port.
