Pier crash

By now many of you have probably seen the photos/videos of the Magic crashing into the pier in Ocho Rios today. If not Google can show you plenty. Maybe some of you older seafarers can chime in on the seaworthiness of the ship based on those photos.

To me, it looks like they are going to need some divers to inspect the damage below the waterline.

EXCELLENT POINT!

However, again being from the upper midwest, we would substitute thingamabob with thingamajig. It's just part of our vernacular.

I prefer "thingamabobs" since they float.

Good Morning Privateer43

Just thought I'd let you know that the "baloon thingeis" technical name are "watchamajigs", unless your from the upper midwest (like me). We refer to them as "whatchamacallits".

From John Heald today

"

Good evening I’m told Carnival Magic has been cleared to sail and will be departing for Bimini shortly and she’ll be back to Port Miami for her next sailing as planned on Feb 10. That’s all for now. Goodnight from the UK. John

I hope she gets repaired quickly. The dock looked like it will take a while to get back into service.

You're right that you'll never get those answers. I'm sure it makes the whole matter hit closer to home when you've met one of the affected crew members. There is some good news in that the photos posted later last night were closer up and much more clear of the damage. It looked like it was mostly superficial denting, scratching and marking from the balloon thingies that hold the ship off the pier. Maybe she will be able to continue to operate safely.

I keep thinking about the crew we met on this ship. Especially Jvauna, who was looking forward to going to Jamaica to see her family. Carnival was supposed to let her family on board as visitors while the ship was docked. I wonder if they were on board when this happened, hadn’t boarded yet or what? Did her mother panic and decide her daughter should give up the shipboard life? Questions that I’ll never get answered.

Thanks for sharing. We left the Magic on January 13th. I is a surprise to hear about it the news. Just shows the problems with docking in the wind. When folks complain about missing ports, they don’t understand what could happen.
