The river town of Winona is located at the homestead of Chief Wapasha's band and Wahpasha's Cap, a magnificent mountain with a rounded top of red limestone. Sugar Loaf Mountain towers 500 feet above what was once the main channel of the Mississippi and is now Lake Winona. Indian legend has it that the mountain represented the cap of Chief Wapasha, transformed into stone.
