Ship tip

Viking lies to its passengers about the likelihood that you will have to change ships mid-cruise. We were scheduled to sail on Lofn from Amsterdam to Bucharest but they told us the day before boarding that it would be a different boat, the Lif, because of “technical issues” with Lofn. But then midway through our trip (at Bamberg) they announce we have to change ships—to the Lofn—because low water levels prevent passage past Bamberg. This is apparently a frequent practice but they never warn prospective or current passengers about this.

Of course we knew about the issue of water levels beforehand. What I object to is the mendacity and lack of transparency of Viking. They lied to us about why it was a change of ships and then didn’t tell us about the need to change ships—a full day affair-until the day beforehand. I would avoid any river cruises between Amsterdam and Budapest. Take shorter cruises that don’t involve the river problems around Nuremberg.

A little research helps. It is well known that in the summer month’s European river levels can get pretty low which ultimately effects where the river cruises can traverse.

Why should you research every port, it is the cruise operators responsibility to be open and honest with potential clients and make them aware of such things thereby saving themselves from potential negative feedback and also saving their passengers from an experience they might not enjoy especially if they have saved up their hard earned money for this trip.

The water levels have been a problem for a while and these are well known problems. More research was needed.
