Review summary

We truly enjoyed this Rhine cruise from the accommodations, to the staff, to the places we toured and the guides who helped us. It could not have been better. Viking did an excellent job, thanks.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We arrived in Amsterdam a day early and had a wonderful time with the museums, sightseeing and Indonesian food. Our ship was easily accessed and we boarded mid afternoon. It was a very easy transition from being on our own to being on board.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The food was very good and we enjoyed the dining experience where we were able to make many new acquaintances.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Since this was a river cruise, on board activities consisted of cocktails, eating, sleeping and port talks. We enjoyed it all as the cruise allowed us to see marvelous sights and cities without packing and unpacking.

Entertainment

We did not need on board entertainment. After the tours, sightseeing, exercising, eating and drinking, we were ready for bed!

Children's Programs

No children on board.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The best way to describe our service is to state that all staff performed in an excellent manner, which we have come to expect from Viking. There's a smiling, pleasant dedication to provide for one's needs and make one comfortable. In addition, our cruise director, Dominique was over the top in providing information, solving difficulties and accompanying us. The trip would have been great but she made it fabulous!

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
It was a European river boat and there is not much difference between the designs. For our cruise, though, there was constant cleaning and upkeep and continual efforts to keep the ship in shape.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Our cabin was very adequate, efficient and comfortable.

Ship tip

Do not go with friends. Meet new people from all over, share new experiences and explore, explore, explore!

Ports of call

Amsterdam, Netherlands

5 out of 5
We arrived a day early and thoroughly enjoyed Amsterdam. The Van Gogh and Riksmuseums were marvelous and Amsterdam is a beautiful, unique city. We did not take or need a tour.

Kinderdijk, Netherlands

5 out of 5
How could you be in the Netherlands and not see a windmill? Fascinating tour and history.

Cologne, Germany

5 out of 5
Cologne was our favorite, from our guide to its history, its cathedral, its kolsch beer, its cologne and its vibrancy we thoroughly enjoyed our day there.

Koblenz, Germany

5 out of 5
We visited the Marksburg castle which was a fascinating tour.

Rudesheim, Germany

5 out of 5
We had a great time at dinner in the Dresseleck area. Well worth it.

Mannheim (Heidelberg), Germany

5 out of 5
We started our tour at Mannheim and bused to Heidelberg for a tour of the castle and then several hours on our own in the city. A perfect combination as we learned a lot about the castle and university and explored the city on our own.

Speyer, Germany

5 out of 5
We rejoined the ship in Speyer, a short walk from the ship. Again, walking, exercise and exploration.

Strasbourg, France

5 out of 5
A fabulous city and our tour was excellent, explaining the importance of the city as well as its history and geographical significance. Another beautiful cathedral. Thereafter we had several hours to explore on our own and we enjoyed it.

Breisach Am Rhine, Germany

5 out of 5
From here, we toured the Black Forest with a guide who loved his subject. We learned a lot, saw a lot and can't wait for our cuckoo clock to arrive. After lunch we toured the Colmar Pocket museum, battleground and the Audie Murphy memorial. Our guide was from Prague, Czech Republic and a true scholar of WWII. He made it clear that without the allies defeating Nazi Germany, as a Slav, he and many other ethnicities would not exist. There was not a dry eye in the group and we veterans felt very proud to have served.

Basel, Switzerland

5 out of 5
Although we disembarked upon arriving in Basel we spent two more days there and found it to be a beautiful, bustling city. We took the train over to Lake Lucerne for the day and enjoyed that as well.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Typical disembarkation but made easy because we didn't have to rush to the airport.
