This Rhine trip packs a lot into a short amount of time, so it’s good for those with little vacation time. Another great thing is that Viking takes care of essentially all of the logistics and planning for you. They have things running smoothly. Just be prepared to walk quite a bit.
Embarkation

Smooth, with escorted pickup from the airport In Amsterdam. Our room was also ready much earlier than anticipated, when we arrived, which was wonderful.

Food quality was very nice.

Not really much onboard. You’ll be off the ship most of the time anyway.

We had a basic room with just a window, but it was clean and comfortable, if a bit snug. Honestly, I don’t think the veranda is worth it on this voyage as you’ll want to be up top to see the view on both sides anyway. Plus there’s not a ton of sailing time during the day. Just note that the windows are very high and also recessed. If you’re short, you probably won’t be able to see out of them.
Ship tip
Seats for dinner on the small open deck area behind the lounge are extremely limited, and competition was stiff. If you can swing it, though, this is really the only way to get a table for two.
Pleasant but not a ton to do other than the windmills. Definitely interesting to see the inside of the windmill, but the stairs are very steep. The scenic cruising along the river after leaving this port is super cool, too. There are cows and horses just bathing and frolicking in the river. Cute.
Fun, walkable city. Our ship was docked behind the main train station, so it was reasonably easy to walk straight from the ship into town after dropping off our luggage and freshening up. Don’t forget to pick up a stroopwafel! Also highly recommend trying some Indonesian food if you can. We did takeout and enjoyed our food on a bench while people watching.
Nice mix of things to do here. The Viking walking tour in the morning was a good orientation, and then we walked around on our own later. Definitely grab a schnitzel and the local kolsch beer. If you, like me, aren’t normally a beer person, this one might surprise you. It’s light and refreshing.
The optional excursion to Bruhl was a little underwhelming. Nice palaces, but the history/substance of the tour was not that interesting.
Pretty sail-away if you leave in the evening.
Great for exploring on your own. Plenty of food and shopping options. A shuttle is provided to take you from the dock to downtown. Shops have cute displays. Streets are busier here than the German towns along the route. Cathedral was cool but very crowded.
Breisach itself is cute to wander around but quite small. Great ice cream right by the dock. We took an excursion from here to Colmar, France, which was lovely. Also went on the Black Forest drive. That excursion was a bit disappointing.
Very picturesque, walkable town. The Romanesque cathedral was my favorite church of the trip. Plentiful cafes on the main street to have a coffee, but beware the service was a bit slow in our experience.
