Review summary
Short and simple weekend relocation cruise. The Star is an older ship and should be understood before boarding. The staff were amazing! My wife an I cruised on the Royal princess in June and one of the bar servers had transferred to the ship we were vacationing on 4 months later remembered my wife and I, she already knew our drink preferences and we had lots of fun reconnecting with someone we had formed a relationship with preciously, it made our cruise feel 150% more personal.
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Embarkation was super smooth for this cruise, helps when yours is the only ship in port!
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
As usual princess does really good food! We didn’t love the main dining room meal for ONE of the Nights, the meal was good however we found the food to be not to our liking, for only that meal. The buffet on the Star is ok however with it being an older ship we found the selection to be limited and the Buffet area as a whole to be smaller then we would have liked, still good selection and variety, in addition to traditional breakfast fare there were international breakfast selections which was really nice. On disembarkation day there was a line up out of horizons because they ran out of clean plates.
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
We were on a short weekend relocation cruise so there wasn’t as much time to enjoy all the offered activities. We did love the trivia games, as well as the fitness courses offered complementary. The pool and hot tubs were very relaxing and we got very lucky to have amazing weather for begging on November.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
We didn’t have sufficient time to also explore the stage shows on this cruise as it was only a short weekend vacation. The live musical performances in the wheelhouse bar and the DJ at Skywalkers lounge were spot on! The live jazz at the Wheelhouse bar was the highlight of our trip, the perfect accompaniment for easy evening dancing and a relaxed upscale atmosphere to unwind and socialize at the end of a busy day.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
The Princess staff are amazing!! They always go the extra mile to ensure that the guests have the most unique and relaxing experience possible. We met one of the bar servers who had served my wife and I during our previous cruise to Alaska. She remembered us and our regular drink orders from June (we next cruised in early November). The personal element brought a completely different and personalized feeling to our short vacation.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
The Star Princess is an older ship, with that understanding going in the ship
Design is very accommodating and clean. The staff is very friendly and attentive, would happily sail on the Star again.
Cabin / Stateroom
3 out of 5
We love traveling with princess! However this trip, the stateroom smelled like sewage when we first got on board and the whole 12th floor did as well. Previous reviewers have also mentioned this for this ship, the aroma dissipated as such we weren’t bothered by it after the first night of our cruise. Star Princess is an older ship and despite regular maintenance the room had signs of age they didn’t distract from our vacation. Lastly, since this cruise was a relocation from Alaska, I suspect the A/C wasent charged prior to the cruise and we (as Canadians) found the night temperatures in our room to be warmer then we were comfortable with,.
Ship tip
The ship is older, even though she has been carefully and attentively maintained her age is apparent. We loved cruising on the Star and will again happily, just expect an older ship. The public areas were always clean and fully functional. Since our last cruise was medallion class, we wished this was as well! The medallion is an amazing add to an already super relaxing vacation.
The disembarkation was ok, there could have been better organization for getting off the ship. We had booked a private shuttle separate from Princess and meeting them could have been more straight forward had it not been a giant uncoordinated mass of people all looking for transport at the same time. Would have been helpful to have a dedicate section for third part transfers, ubers, taxis.
We are taking Star out of San Francisco on 11 day to Alaska July 2. The medallion class is being updated on the Star, March 2020. I hope they do some other update. I can understand not updating if ship was heading to shipyard & retirement. I read after the Alaska season 2020, the ship will re-locate to Sydney & do sailings Sydney/New Zealand 2021-2022
