Review summary

Ship- Although the ship is old, it certainly does not appear as old as it is. The interior was nice and we were happy with our cabin. It is not the biggest of ships, which meant that sometimes the pool side could get a bit crowded. But overall, it's a nice ship. Restaurants- The buffets were quite average, a nice selection but definitely not our best. The main restaurant food was very nice, though they did seem to favour fish on the menu. Bars- The Medusa Lounge was the biggest bar on the ship which was a nice size. But the Tides Bar, Explorers Lounge and Water's Edge were all very small. Which meant that it was very hard to get seats, it also didn't help that all the bars were on the same deck which meant that it was quite congested. Entertainment- Bars: Although the singers in the bars were very good, the acts were always in the same bars at the same time, which meant it could get quite boring and repetitive. It just lacked a bit of variety, although the game shows and entertainment hosts were brilliant. It would have been much better to alternate the acts between the bars. Poolside: We were incredibly disappointed with the lack of entertainment poolside. The only day there was live music was the on sea day completely neglecting all the other days. Even the daily quiz was not always done on deck. Broadway Show Lounge: We might be critical as we are performers ourselves, but the quality of singers from the show team was extremely weak. The dancing, choreography and costumes were all brilliant, but it seems like they employed stronger dancers and the singing was a second thought. One of the male singers was very good but he wasn't even the lead vocalist, the female vocalist was definitely not worthy to be a solo performer, but after listening to the other female singers she was definitely the better out of a bad bunch. Although the harmonies were lovely, they should definitely consider doing more group numbers and less solo singing with this team. One of the nights they performed an original story line around music with these awful American accents that were just shouted across the stage, it was cringeworthy. This idea would have been great if they could actually act. When they did the musical theatre performance we were very excited and were very happy with the choice of musicals as they picked shows that were not necessarily overdone. The only problem was that they did five or six songs from each musical, where they would have been better off doing two songs from each show to create a bigger variety. Late night disco: The late night discos were performed in one of the smallest bars on the ship, where the music was just played, no host, lighting change or atmosphere, with the world's smallest dancefloor. The disco definitely needs reworking. Overall: We enjoyed our holiday, the most disappointing thing about this experience was just the lack of bars and variety and entertainment. But the performers that were present were good. If you are looking for a cheap and cheerful holiday, with friendly and polite staff that is exactly what you are getting with the Marella Dream and I would thoroughly recommend.
