Review summary

Having been on nine cruises on three other lines before, I feel qualified in making the following comments: Galaxy was a very nice ship with beautiful public and private spaces but has some traffic pattern problems....particularly the need to go up or down a flight because of interrupted floor plans. Also, the need to traverse heavy smoking areas to get from A to B was a nuisance. Entirely too many smoking areas are on this ship and it made for a lot of unpleasantness to avid non-smokers! The largest club, The Panorama, was a beautiful lounge at the very top and front of ship... but was seldom used. There was very boring entertainment scheduled for this venue and nobody bothered to use it... what a waste! Shows in Main theatre were TERRIFIC! Except for a few isolated cases (the very good string trio in atrium) all other lounge entertainers and disco band were average to below average and did not inspire one to sit and listen. The staff were all very attentive and pleasant and did a great job. The food and food service facilities were first rate. Many activities were mostly geared to the geriatric set, a group far older than I expected to encounter on Galaxy. The biggest attraction seemed to be Bingo. To offset a lack of activities, it would have been nice to have the pools and hot tubs open at night til a reasonable hour... say midnight. They were all closed far too early to enjoy. We have become so accustomed to the freestyle cruising of some other lines that it was very difficult to be regimented again for dinner seatings. It really puts a halt on the day's activities, having to be available at a given time for meals... even if one is not ready to eat.

Pros: Ship was very nicely decorated throughtout, even simplest of cabins was well appointed. Food was very good

Cons: Average age of guests was far older than expected and it seemed that many activities were geared to older crowd. There was too much smoking on this ship and was always aware of it. You had to go through very smoky casino to get from one end of ship to other and it was a nuisance. Would have preferre
