We had gorgeous weather (which truly helps make a cruise great). We choose this trip because we hadn’t been on the Sunshine, and Charleston is driveable for us. But don’t think I would say I have a great need to sail on Sunshine again.
Embarkation

NOT a fan of Charleston Port. Just not as efficient as other ports (specifically Baltimore and Bayonne). Having to bus between buildings was inconvenient. But I guess it really doesn’t matter, as ship will be deployed to another port soon.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Ate every dinner in the main dining room. “My time” dining worked well through the Hub app. We checked in and were notified when table was ready. Several in our group ordered steak house options, and were very pleased with their dinners. Regular menu had enough options for all to find *something*. My personal favorite place to eat is Blue Iguana. Very fresh ingredients. Do NOT recommend Guys “pig patty”. I don’t know what they do to the bacon, but it had absolutely NO flavor. Was like biting into a crunchy, greasy, skinny rice cake. Burger itself was ok. Tried JiJi’s and Pasta bar for lunch - each worthwhile. Also enjoy customizing sandwiches at the deli. Never really ate off the main buffet.
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
I’m a pool/beach/sun person, so sitting on the deck is my go-to. But others in our group enjoyed going to various trivia events. Believe there were enough to keep them happy. If not, seemed to be enough places around for those who like to play their own games.
Entertainment
5 out of 5
Impressed with the playlist performers. The “Rock” show (70’s and 80’s) was especially good. Very talented performers - higher caliber then I’ve experienced before on Carnival. Did miss having a violin trio on this trip. Have really enjoyed that on other ships/trips.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
Most staff were as expected on a ship - always amazed at their ability to remember names. I try to not be a high-maintenance passenger, and show my appreciation for what they do.
Ship Quality
1 out of 5
Low score for the design not cleanliness. This was the most convoluted and frustrating ship we’ve been on. In multiple spots you have to go up to go down, due to placement of dining room and kitchen. Walkways were too narrow for high traffic areas, such as into buffet. While the Serenity Deck was interesting with its 3 levels and waterfall, there was really nothing “Serene” about as it overlooks the main deck.
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
Standard interior. Exhaust fan in bathroom actually ran continuously, so that was good for multiple reasons (white noise and “ventilation” 😏). Shower bigger then other ships, but toilet placement was awkward.
Ship tip
Always offer the same advice: manage your expectations. Know what you want from your vacation. If you want personal service and to be pampered, a major cruise line may not be for you. If you are interested in saving money then accept that you will probably get what you pay for.
Again, not a fan of this port, however we were THRILLED that they allowed us to walk to the parking lot and not have to use the shuttles. That saved us quite a bit of time. Just be aware it is a fair distance with your luggage. Our wheels got a workout.
