Overall great experience! This is our second voyage within 6 months on the Sunshine. It’s all about making memories! The crew works diligently to stay on top of things. The ship is clean but shows her age. She has certainly been loved to the point it shows!
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Easier than before! Yes, Port of Charleston is unique but embarkation is easier than before even without VeriFLY!
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
So, last time I thought the food was ok but nothing great.
I have everything another try. So, I’ll admit that I had a better experience with the quick serve options. Guy’s Burger Joint was better. The line at the Blue Iguana is longer for the burritos than the tacos.
So far I’ve been impressed with Carnival’s quick serve options and the main dining experience was even better than before.
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
Well, the activities were limited due to rough seas and high wind conditions. The pool deck and serenity decks and hot tubs stayed jammed up during the sea days.
However, first experience in the casino and I’m up! Yay me!
Entertainment
5 out of 5
Chis Wiles was one of the comedians. That joker is hilarious! If you like locker room humor, you’ll enjoy his show! Please don’t go to his show if you’re looking for something to complain about, if you are serious, highly sensitive or if you have eliminated 4 lettered words from the dictionary.
DJs we’re great, musicians were great. Everything was great!
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Everyone was awesome! For what it’s worth, I’ve never had a bad experience with staff on any cruise ship!
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
The Sunshine is old and needs some TLC.
Within the last 6 months, we’ll deserved repairs were made to the running track! Bravo!
The starboard glass near the stairs to the serenity deck is still shattered.
This time it looks like the light shades in the Marketplace were used as speed bags! There were several exposed light bulbs, shades were damaged or hanging and chairs still need some cleaning.
The layout is odd but it beats working in an office!
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
Here it goes….We are adventurous! We decided to stay in a cabin some would suggest is the worst cabin on a ship!
We stayed on Deck 1 in the third most forward cabin on the port side. 1410.
The cabin was great! The seas were rough! The noise….BOOM followed by waves crashing past the portholes was exciting!
Hendro, our attendant, was amused on how we thought it was one of the best roller coaster experiences we’ve had!
If you get motion sickness, don’t do it! If you are wanting an experience and a story to share, heck yeah! LOL
Ship tip
I said it before and I’ll say it again…. She’s an older ship! She shows her age, she shows her wear and she is still beautiful! How many years does she have left? I’d tend to think things will happen when she leaves Charleston for good in 2 years. Maybe she has 4-5 years of service left? Maybe she’ll get a serious overhaul? I tend to believe that she’s on her way out. Maybe because of the trend of shifting to alternative fuels? Anyway, she’s still worth giving a try.
Beautiful sand and crystal clear water!
Walk past the cabanas and stacks of loungers and grab a private spot under the trees. Grab a lounge chair if you can muster one! Don’t forget to get your stateroom attendant to fill a cooler full of ice and take your allowed amount of beverages with you!
You will end up with the best private beach experience!
Chris Wiles is a household name in the Greensboro, NC area. He was the host of our local comedy club for over 20 years before joining Carnival a few years ago. Very funny guy. He comes back home and does a few shows every year if you are interested in seeing his stand up again in the future.
