Review summary

This cruise is more of a cultural immersion and can be very educational vs a luxury European river cruise. Everything is still five star but reflects this part of the world. The culture is rich and the people are friendly and happy. There are parts that are emotional and disturbing, such as the killing fields in Cambodia and the Vietnam War related parts, but it is an amazing opportunity to learn about this part of history and bond with the people that share their stories of these tragedies. If you want high-end luxury, stick to the European river tours provided by AMA. If you want an exciting adventure and an opportunity to meet some amazing people that have endured and are growing and thriving, then this is the cruise for you.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Execution of departure from the hotel in Siem Reap to the ship was flawless.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The breakfast buffet had plenty of options. There was a menu for lunch and a buffet if nothing on the menu suited you. Dinner options had a local flair and they always had a burger or a backup option.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
The "pool" was small and chilly but it suited the ship. The gym had a couple of treadmills which got little use so availability was good. The on board wellness instructor had different options throughout the day (yoga, stretching, etc.) which had a small draw of 2-5 people. Not too much in the way of onboard activities but you didn't need much since this cruise was very excursion centered.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The evening entertainment was simple but entertaining. Some nights depended on guest participation which was usually light. Most people turned in early due to busy days of excursions.

Children's Programs

No children's program on this cruise. No children under the age of 16 on our cruise so not an issue.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The service was amazing. The crew was friendly, remembered our names and preferences. Always available and ready to help.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The AMA Dara is a newer ship and was very well appointed for this type of cruise, clean and well-maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Once onboard we were offered an upgrade to a suite for half price ($400 per person vs. $800 per), so we actually stayed in 307. The added space was nice and the suites have wifi in the room and a bathtub. Regular cabins only had wifi access in the Saigon Lounge and on the Sundeck. The ship had two computers available for guest use.

Ship tip

The ship accommodates 124 guests and is small enough to easily get around so don't worry too much about what floor you are on.

Disembarkation

The crew was efficient and organized. They accommodated everyone's schedules, even people with early departures or people not staying at the official hotel for the post-cruise.
