Review summary

The Fathom is good if either you want to pay to volunteer or want a short convenient  visit to Cuba. But I booked 3 days in Puerto PLata and we only got 1.5 days becuase they added Santiago de Cuba. I also was on the full week cruise the week before to Cuba. I wanted another day in PP as I booked.

The Cuba portion was good for ease of getting around and guaranteed food, tho the dining room food was much better than the buffet. By the time the 2 weeks was up I was ready to leave, really sick of the decor and food and guests and staff constantly letting the doors slam as I spent alot of time in my room the second week. Its a small ship which is OK but not alot to do.

Lots of repeat cruisers 3,4,5 times, for me, never again. I had enough.

The worst was an almost total lack of information or misinformation, everyday no one had an answer or gave me the wrong answer, even the staff were frustrated with no info or misinfo.

DO not book or accept cabins D1-21 (odd number cabins-right side) Constant door slamming by crew using the corridor to get from their section to other parts of the ship. Turpentine smell from painting in the crew areas. Flies in my room everyday when attendent leaves the door open. Attendant slams door along with the guests. If you need oceanview book even number D cabins midship or toward the rear, alot quieter. Ships rudder? or something so noisy on the odd # side everytime coming into port. I was also in C20 balcony the first week and lots nicer and quieter. But electric outlets don't work well. They are stripped and hard to charge. Wifi is $20 a day and couldn't read my email for 2 weeks as ship only lets you use one browser at a time and overseas access to yahoo accounts requires a second verifier like your cell phone or another device. Only way is to use OUTLOOK? or maybe pay $40/day for 2 devices. AMber cove is nice and has free wifi but ship wouldn't give me the password to use as a second device. Cost me lots of money and aggravation the day I tried to connect and failed, hundreds of $$. Plus mosquitos bites.

Ship tip

Good luck. Ice tea is instant so its not very good. On one ship I made my own everyday. Bring your own tea bags if you want to do that. English breakfast tea is not good ice tea. The buffet food gets cold before you sit down. There are no microwaves to heat it up. Dining room service takes longer.

Ports of call

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, CUBA

House of Diego Vasquez on square (1500) excellent house and period furniture. Go here instead of buying cigars/rum. If you are going to El Morro-The Fort, you can buy them there.
