We did a seven hour bus excursion to the waterfalls and a zoo. Next time I would rent a car and just drive to the waterfalls by myself —they were beautiful, but it took too long on this excursion and too many people on our excursion had mobility issues.

We lucked out with the weather and enjoyed two mostly sunny days. We went on the Hoppa On Hoppa Off tour and would definitely recommend it.

We toured the Volcanoes National Park with a private party tour as they included more features than the ships options did. It was great and included the lava tube which many other ship passengers missed!

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a gem and worth a visit

Unfortunately we did not find an independent tour, so only took the shuttle into town. The town was somewhat depressing - buildings in disrepair or empty and not too much in the way of shopping. Taking one of the ship's tours might have been better, but the prohibitively high prices discouraged us from booking them.
