Salmanaca: 2 hours each way by bus. There is around a 45 minute tour, done by Spanish guides, who were far better than our Portuguese ones and then 3 ½ hours on your own. Salmanaca was a very interesting stop, with a lot to see and enjoyable shopping and food. Finally, we had a day where we spent a good deal of time away from the boat. This was a long bus ride, but definitely worth it.

This worked out to be a very pleasant and fortuitous surprize. Ordinarily we would cruise through the last two locks to the Spanish border and spend a day in Salamanca. Because the last two locks were undergoing scheduled maintenance we were bused to Salamanca and spent an overnight there. We got a more in-depth visit to the city - one that we would not have gotten and we did not miss the most scenic part of the Douro river which ended at the first of the last two locks. I much preferred this change in the irinerary.

Had to dock where Sabor meets Duoro since last lock closed for maintenance. Chose to stay on board since it was a 6-hour motocoach ride (3-hours each way) to Salamanca. Excursion offered to Foz Coa Museum which was 30-min ride with a 90-min visit. Museum was well done! Could have offered a ride out to see actual petroglyphs since there was plenty time but they didn’t. Nothing else available to do in town - very rural.
