Just did this. Did you ever lose or break the string in a pair of sweat pants ? Well, to put a new one in, if you have an old camera shutter release cable, you can easily pull a new string through. The cable is thin and flexible enough to push / pull through the waistband. Attach a new string, and pull out the cable. It helps if you have a long cable release
