Viking Cruises Takes Delivery of New Ship Viking Vela
Viking Cruises has taken delivery of its newest ocean ship, Viking Vela. A delivery ceremony took place at the Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The new Viking Vela will spend an inaugural season sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean and in Northern Europe.
Classified as a small ship (as are all Viking Ocean ships), Viking Vela has 499 staterooms with a capacity for 998 guests.
"We are proud to welcome the newest sister ship to our award-winning ocean fleet,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking. “Together with Fincantieri we have built the world’s most elegant small ocean ships. With the arrival of our newest vessel, we look forward to introducing even more curious travelers to the Viking way of exploration.”
Viking Vela features a range of fantastic onboard amenities for guests, as well as purpose-built staterooms designed to suit a variety of traveler's needs. Dining options include The Restaurant, Chef’s Table, Manfredi’s Restaurant, The Kitchen Table, World Cafe, and Mamsen’s. Other ship features include the Nordic Spa, Hair Salon, Fitness Center, shops, theatre, cinemas, multiple pools, and a sports deck.
Viking Cruises is currently working on a project for a partial hybrid propulsion system for future ocean ships based on liquid hydrogen and fuel cells. This would allow the company to operate at zero-emission in the Norwegian Fjords, as well as other sensitive environments. Viking Vela has a traditional propulsion platform, and considered hydrogen-ready, and can be retrofitted in the future.
