Cruise Lines Share Total Solar Eclipse Experiences Onboard Ships
Several cruise lines had the opportunity to have ships positioned perfectly in the path of totality for guests to experience the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Lucky guests onboard were able to experience the natural phenomena from the high seas in the most unique way possible.
Following are some of the stories shared on social media by cruise lines of the onboard solar eclipse viewing experiences.
Holland America Line’s Koningsdam and Zaandam both offered cruises in the path of full totality for the eclipse. Guests on Zaandam witnessed the eclipse during an at-sea day as the ship sailed between Puerto Vallarta and Loreto, Mexico on a special 14-night Solar Eclipse and Mexican Rivera itinerary. On Koningsdam, guests experienced the eclipse off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico during a 22-day Solar Eclipse and Hawaii Circle itinerary sailing from San Diego to Honolulu.

Princess Cruises’ ships Discovery Princess and Emerald Princess had a front-row seat to the nature spectacular. The line offered a 10-day ‘Mexican Rivera with Total Solar Eclipse’ itinerary on Discovery Princess. Guests viewed the eclipse as the ship was at sea sailing between Mazatlan and Manzanillo, Mexico. Emerald Princess guests also had the opportunity to see the eclipse in full totality during a 15-day Panama Canal transit as it sailed between Cabo San Lucas and Huatulco, Mexico.

2026 Solar Eclipse Cruises
The next total solar eclipse will occur on August 12, 2026, with visibility in Russia, Greenland, and Europe (including Portugal, Spain, and Iceland).
Several cruise lines have already announced plans for the upcoming event. Princess Cruises will offer a solar eclipse viewing on Sky Princess. Cunard will offer two 2026 cruises that will position guests in the path of totality. Queen Mary 2 will be docked for an overnight in Reykjavik for an overnight call during a 14-night Norway and Iceland voyage. Guests on Queen Anne will have a prime viewing opportunity in 2026, as the eclipse will pass as the ship departs La Coruna during a 7-night Spain and France cruise sailing from Southampton. Expedition operator, Albatross Expeditions has announced a special 12-night Greenland Solar Eclipse cruise, sailing from Reykavik to Kangerlussuaq.
